Berberine

Herbal

Also known as: Berberine HCl, BBR

Berberine is a bioactive compound extracted from several plants including goldenseal and barberry. It activates AMPK (a metabolic master switch) and has been shown to rival metformin for blood sugar control.

Best Timing

Take with meals to reduce GI side effects and time with glucose absorption. Split into 2–3 doses — short half-life.

Absorption

Poor bioavailability (~5%). Dihydroberberine is 5x better absorbed. Always take with food. GI side effects decrease over time.

  • -Berberine phytosome – enhanced bioavailability
Not found in common foods — derived from goldenseal, Oregon grape, barberry
Alpha-Lipoic AcidSynergy

Both support blood sugar regulation through different mechanisms.

ProbioticsCaution

Berberine has antimicrobial properties and may affect probiotic survival. Separate by 2+ hours.

CurcuminSynergy

Both activate AMPK and have complementary anti-inflammatory effects.

MagnesiumSynergy

Both support insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.
