Glucosamine & Chondroitin

Other

Also known as: Glucosamine sulfate, Chondroitin sulfate

Glucosamine and chondroitin are structural components of cartilage, widely used together for osteoarthritis and joint comfort. They support the cartilage matrix and reduce inflammation in joint tissue.

Best Timing

Take with meals to reduce GI upset. Effects build gradually — evaluate after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.

Absorption

Glucosamine oral bioavailability ~25%; chondroitin is larger and less well-absorbed but still clinically effective. Consistency matters more than any single dose.

Health Goals
ðŸĶīJoints🧎Longevity
Who Should Take This
Elderly (60+)Athletes
  • Reduces pain and stiffness in moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis
  • May slow cartilage breakdown over time
  • Supports joint mobility and function
  • Anti-inflammatory effects in synovial tissue
  • Well-tolerated alternative to NSAIDs for chronic joint pain
Osteoarthritis of the knee1,500 mg glucosamine sulfate + 1,200 mg chondroitin

Daily

Can be split into 2–3 doses. Full effect at 8–12 weeks

Joint maintenance1,500 mg glucosamine

Daily

  • -Glucosamine sulfate – most evidence, preferred form
  • -Glucosamine hydrochloride – similar glucosamine but weaker trial data
  • -Chondroitin sulfate – typically bovine or shark-derived
  • -Combined glucosamine + chondroitin + MSM formulations
Bone broth (small amounts)Shellfish shells (source of commercial glucosamine)Animal cartilage (source of commercial chondroitin)
CurcuminSynergy

Curcumin adds anti-inflammatory action complementary to cartilage support.

BoswelliaSynergy

Boswellia reduces joint inflammation; commonly stacked for osteoarthritis.

Collagen PeptidesSynergy

Supplies amino-acid substrate for cartilage matrix repair.

Omega-3Synergy

EPA/DHA reduce joint inflammation through a separate pathway.
